Rhizom
Cottbus, after the structural transformation. In a youth club operating across changing locations in the city, young men come together, hang out, present themselves. I visited this place regularly over several months and photographed there. The young men know each other, some closely, others only in passing. A web of belonging and demarcation that resists clear definition.
Rhizom addresses in-between spaces: between image and body, between role model and self. The work translates roles into images strongly shaped by digital visual cultures. Gestures emerge, are adopted and passed on, until the sequence is no longer traceable. Set against this is a fixed, physical place. The youth club functions as a connective element in the work, without ever being shown. It is a space of encounter, but also of confrontation.
The images show what goes without saying: poses that repeat, attitudes that are passed on. Alongside the loud ones are the quiet ones, alongside the self-assured the ones who observe. Rhizom holds on to what emerges on screens and continues in the body.
A first printed edition of the project will be published at the end of July 2026.
Konstrukt
Wood, hammer, nail.
Tools of construction.
Konstrukt examines the invisible structures through which masculinity is formed, performed, and sustained. The work is situated in rural Bavaria and focuses on adolescence as a phase marked by transition, vulnerability, and social conditioning.
By working within close social contexts, Konstrukt exposes the tension between individual presence and inherited expectations. The project does not propose conclusions; instead, it holds masculinity as a mutable construct shaped by place, history, and observation.
Konstrukt has been presented in various exhibition contexts, including EMOP Berlin 2025 and the Museumsquartier Osnabrück.

Vokabular
Photography can be understood as a tool for orientation — an attempt to approach what remains partially inaccessible.
Vokabular engages with a landscape in constant transformation. Lanzarote, shaped by volcanic activity and wind, appears not as a neutral setting but as an active counterpart that resists clear definition. The island functions as a field of tension in which observation, encounter, and uncertainty intersect.
Central to the project is the use of language as a structural element. Selected Spanish words are placed alongside the photographs, not as explanatory captions but as associative references. Drawing on the format of a vocabulary book, these terms interrupt linear reading and expand the interpretive space of the images.
Rather than documenting a specific place, Vokabular reflects on the conditions of photographic perception. The project examines how image and language influence, fragment, or redirect the understanding of an unfamiliar environment.
Vokabular was developed within the international Blended Intensive Programme “Mare Nostrum / Mare Tuum” and selected for publication in the accompanying magazine. The project was also published online at

Info
Benedikt Burger is a photographer based in Berlin.
His projects have dealt with the visual construction of masculinity and the subtle mechanisms through which social environments, symbolic spaces and language shape identity, perception and belonging.
He is currently developing the series Rhizom, examining how young men from a youth club in Cottbus perform in digital spaces.
